The Core of Christianity: Faith Explained With Scripture

What is the one thing that changes everything? In our fast-paced, often cynical world, we are taught to trust only what we can see, touch, or prove. We rely on our bank accounts, our career trajectories, and our own calculated plans. Yet, at the heart of the Christian walk lies a concept that defies human logic: faith.

For many, faith feels like a vague, misty emotion or a blind leap into the dark. But for the believer, faith is the very bedrock of our existence. It is the bridge between our current reality and the eternal promises of God. Understanding faith isn’t just a theological exercise; it is the key to spiritual growth and finding peace in an unpredictable world. Today, we are going back to the basics to explore what it truly means to live a life fueled by biblical faith.

Defining Faith Through the Word

To understand the core of Christianity, we must look to the definitive source. The Bible does not leave us guessing about the definition of faith. Hebrews 11:1 provides the most direct explanation:

“Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.” (ESV)

In the original Greek, the word for assurance is hypostasis, which refers to a title deed or a foundation. Faith is not a “cross your fingers and hope for the best” kind of sentiment. It is a legal guarantee. It is the spiritual certainty that what God has promised is already a reality, even if our physical eyes haven’t caught up yet.

Christianity is unique because our faith is not based on a set of rules, but on a relationship with a Person. Romans 10:17 tells us that “faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.” This means our trust is built through a consistent Bible study practice. As we read the stories of God’s faithfulness in the past, our confidence for our own future begins to solidify.

In simple terms, faith is:

  • Trusting in God’s character (who He is).
  • Trusting in God’s promises (what He said He would do).
  • Taking action based on those two truths.

The Context: Why Faith Matters Today

Historical context shows us that the early church didn’t thrive because their lives were easy. On the contrary, they faced immense persecution and social isolation. Their faith was forged in the fire. When Paul wrote about trusting God, he wasn’t writing from a luxury villa; he was often writing from a prison cell.

Theological weight is found in the fact that faith is the only way we can access the grace of God. Ephesians 2:8-9 reminds us, “For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.” This is the “Core of Christianity.” We cannot earn our way to God through perfect behavior. We simply reach out and accept His gift through faith.

Think of it like an airplane. You can study the mechanics of aerodynamics, read the pilot’s manual, and watch videos of planes taking off. You can have “intellectual” belief that the plane flies. But you don’t actually exercise faith until you walk down the jetway, sit in the seat, and trust the pilot to take you 30,000 feet into the air. Similarly, many people believe “about” God, but Christianity calls us to put our weight on Him.

Practical Application: Living by Faith

Moving from theory to practice is where the transformation happens. If you find yourself struggling with doubt or feeling stagnant in your spiritual growth, here are actionable steps to implement today:

1. Identify Your “Giant”

What is the one area of your life where you feel the most anxiety? Is it your finances, a strained relationship, or your health? Usually, our greatest anxieties point to the areas where we are relying on ourselves rather than trusting God. Acknowledge this area and consciously pray: “Lord, I choose to trust You with this specific situation.”

2. Guard Your Intake

If you spend four hours a day consuming negative news and only five minutes reading Scripture, your “fear-tank” will be full and your “faith-tank” will be empty. To grow, you must prioritize Bible study. Find a reading plan that focuses on the promises of God.

3. Practice Obedience in the Small Things

Faith is a muscle. You don’t start by lifting 500 pounds; you start with five. Listen for the “still, small voice” of the Holy Spirit throughout your day. Maybe it’s a prompt to text a friend, to be generous with a tip, or to hold your tongue during an argument. As you see God move in the small things, your trust for the big things will naturally expand.

4. Build a “Stone of Remembrance”

In the Old Testament, the Israelites would build altars of stone to remember where God had delivered them. Start a faith journal. Record the times God answered a prayer, provided a way out, or gave you peace during a storm. On the days when your faith feels weak, look back at your history with God.

Conclusion: The Journey of Trust

The core of Christianity is not about having all the answers. It is about knowing the One who does. Faith is the quiet confidence that God is who He says He is and that He is for you, not against you. It is a journey, not a destination. Some days your faith will feel like a mountain, and other days it may feel as small as a mustard seed.

The beauty of the Gospel is that even a mustard seed of faith is enough to move mountains when it is placed in an all-powerful God. As you move forward this week, remember that you don’t have to see the whole staircase to take the first step. Trust the Author and Finisher of your faith, and watch how He transforms your perspective.
