23 Prayer For God’s Will with Scriptures to Back

Rev. Thomas MarshBy Rev. Thomas MarshOctober 10, 2025No Comments10 Mins Read

Praying for God’s will is one of the most powerful acts of surrender a believer can make. It’s an expression of faith that says, “Lord, not my way, but Yours.” In a world that constantly pushes us to chase our own plans, praying for God’s will realigns our hearts with divine purpose. It reminds us that His thoughts are higher than ours and that His plans, though sometimes mysterious, always lead to peace, growth, and eternal good.

When we seek God’s will through prayer, we invite His wisdom to replace our confusion and His timing to overrule our impatience. This kind of prayer is not about giving up control—it’s about finding rest in the One who knows the end from the beginning. Trusting His will means walking by faith, even when we can’t see the full path ahead, confident that His purpose will prevail.

23 Prayer For God’s Will

1. Matthew 6:10 (KJV)

“Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.”

Jesus taught us to pray for God’s will to be done on earth as it is in heaven—perfectly, joyfully, and completely. Aligning with His will invites divine order into our lives.

Lord, let Your will be done in my life as it is in heaven. Help me to surrender every plan, fear, and desire to You. Teach me to walk in obedience and trust, even when I do not understand Your ways.

2. Romans 12:2 (ESV)

“Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind… that by testing you may discern what is the will of God.”

God’s will is revealed through a renewed mind—one that rejects worldly pressures and seeks spiritual clarity. His purpose is discovered through transformation, not conformity.

Lord, renew my mind with Your truth so I may discern Your will clearly. Transform my thoughts and desires to reflect Your heart. Let my life be a living testimony of obedience and faith.

3. Jeremiah 29:11 (KJV)

“For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the Lord, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end.”

God’s will is rooted in love and peace, not confusion or harm. His plans are designed for our good and eternal fulfillment.

Lord, I trust in the plans You have for me. Help me to rest in Your purpose, even when the road feels uncertain. Let Your peace guide me toward the future You have promised.

4. Proverbs 3:5–6 (ESV)

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.”

Following God’s will requires total trust, especially when our understanding is limited. His wisdom straightens paths that seem impossible.

Lord, I choose to trust You with all my heart. Direct my steps and make my path straight. Teach me to acknowledge You in every decision I make.

5. Psalm 143:10 (KJV)

“Teach me to do thy will; for thou art my God: thy spirit is good; lead me into the land of uprightness.”

David’s prayer reflects humility and dependence on God’s guidance. Learning to do His will requires a teachable spirit.

Lord, teach me to do Your will with a willing heart. Lead me in righteousness and fill me with Your Spirit. Help me to follow where You lead, even when the journey feels uncertain.

6. 1 Thessalonians 5:18 (ESV)

“Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.”

Thankfulness is central to living in God’s will. Gratitude keeps our hearts open to His purpose, even in difficult seasons.

Lord, help me to be thankful in every circumstance. Let gratitude shape my heart and remind me of Your goodness. In every season, let me trust that Your will is perfect and kind.

7. Micah 6:8 (KJV)

“He hath shewed thee, O man, what is good; and what doth the Lord require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God?”

God’s will is often simpler than we think—justice, mercy, and humility before Him. These are the foundations of a life that pleases Him.

Lord, help me to walk humbly and live justly. Teach me to show mercy as You have shown mercy to me. Let my actions and heart reflect Your will each day.

8. Ephesians 5:17 (ESV)

“Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is.”

God calls us to seek wisdom and understanding, not to live carelessly. Knowing His will brings clarity and direction.

Lord, give me wisdom to understand Your will in every area of my life. Keep me from foolish decisions and guide me by Your Spirit. Let Your purpose be the foundation of all I do.

9. Isaiah 55:8–9 (KJV)

“For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the Lord.”

God’s will surpasses human understanding. His plans are higher and better than what we could ever imagine.

Lord, remind me that Your ways are higher than mine. Help me to trust Your plan even when it differs from my own. Give me peace in knowing that You see what I cannot.

10. Colossians 1:9 (ESV)

“We have not ceased to pray for you… that you may be filled with the knowledge of his will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding.”

Knowing God’s will is a result of prayer and spiritual growth. He fills us with understanding as we seek Him earnestly.

Lord, fill me with the knowledge of Your will. Grant me spiritual wisdom and insight to follow You faithfully. Let my choices reflect Your guidance and truth.

11. Hebrews 10:36 (KJV)

“For ye have need of patience, that, after ye have done the will of God, ye might receive the promise.”

Patience is essential in doing God’s will. His promises unfold in His timing, not ours.

Lord, give me patience to wait for Your perfect timing. Strengthen me to do Your will faithfully while I wait for the fulfillment of Your promises. Let endurance anchor my faith.

12. Matthew 26:39 (ESV)

“Nevertheless, not as I will, but as you will.”

Jesus’ prayer in Gethsemane is the ultimate example of surrender. Submitting to God’s will often requires trust beyond understanding.

Lord, help me to surrender like Jesus did. Even when Your will is hard to accept, let my heart say, “Not my will, but Yours be done.” Give me courage to obey fully.

13. James 4:15 (KJV)

“For that ye ought to say, If the Lord will, we shall live, and do this, or that.”

Acknowledging God’s will in our plans keeps us humble. It reminds us that every day and every opportunity depend on His grace.

Lord, I place my plans in Your hands. Let everything I do align with Your purpose. Guide my steps and keep me mindful of Your sovereignty over my life.

14. Psalm 40:8 (ESV)

“I delight to do your will, O my God; your law is within my heart.”

Obedience becomes joyful when God’s will fills our hearts. His Word makes us eager to follow Him.

Lord, help me delight in Your will and find joy in obedience. Write Your Word on my heart and make Your truth my greatest treasure.

15. 1 John 2:17 (KJV)

“He that doeth the will of God abideth for ever.”

Living according to God’s will brings eternal reward. Earthly pursuits fade, but obedience has everlasting impact.

Lord, keep me steadfast in Your will so I may abide in Your presence forever. Let my life reflect eternal values and not temporary gain.

16. Philippians 2:13 (ESV)

“For it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure.”

God empowers us to desire and do His will. His Spirit strengthens us from within to live out divine purpose.

Lord, work in me both to will and to act according to Your good pleasure. Align my heart with Yours so I may joyfully fulfill what You’ve called me to do.

17. Psalm 37:4 (KJV)

“Delight thyself also in the Lord; and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart.”

When we delight in God, our desires begin to mirror His will. He reshapes our hearts to long for what He longs for.

Lord, teach me to delight in You above all else. Align my desires with Your will and let my joy be found in Your purpose.

18. 1 Peter 2:15 (ESV)

“For this is the will of God, that by doing good you should put to silence the ignorance of foolish people.”

Doing good honors God and silences criticism. His will often manifests through simple acts of righteousness.

Lord, help me to live out Your will through goodness and grace. Let my actions speak louder than my words, bringing honor to Your name.

19. Psalm 25:4–5 (KJV)

“Shew me thy ways, O Lord; teach me thy paths. Lead me in thy truth, and teach me.”

God’s will is revealed through daily guidance. When we seek His direction, He leads us in truth and wisdom.

Lord, show me Your ways and teach me to walk in them. Lead me by Your truth and keep my heart humble before You.

20. 1 Thessalonians 4:3 (ESV)

“For this is the will of God, your sanctification.”

God’s will is for us to grow in holiness and purity. Sanctification is the ongoing process of becoming more like Christ.

Lord, sanctify me by Your Spirit and make me holy in thought, word, and deed. Let my life reflect Your character and bring glory to Your name.

21. Psalm 16:11 (KJV)

“Thou wilt shew me the path of life: in thy presence is fulness of joy.”

God’s will leads us into fullness of life and joy. His presence brings peace and direction to every step.

Lord, reveal the path of life to me. Lead me in Your will where joy and peace abound. Keep me close to Your presence always.

22. John 7:17 (ESV)

“If anyone’s will is to do God’s will, he will know whether the teaching is from God.”

Obedience brings understanding. When we desire God’s will, discernment follows naturally.

Lord, give me a heart willing to do Your will. Open my understanding to Your truth and confirm Your Word in my spirit.

23. Matthew 12:50 (KJV)

“For whosoever shall do the will of my Father… the same is my brother, and sister, and mother.”

Doing God’s will draws us into intimate relationship with Him. Obedience creates spiritual family and belonging.

Lord, help me to live as part of Your family through obedience to Your will. Let my heart be united with Yours and my actions reflect Your love.

Conclusion

Praying for God’s will is an act of trust that reshapes the heart. It reminds us that life’s greatest peace comes not from control, but from surrender. His will is not to harm us but to bless us and draw us closer to Him.

As you continue to seek His will, may your heart rest in the assurance that every step you take under His guidance leads to purpose, peace, and divine fulfillment. God’s will is perfect, and those who follow it will never walk in darkness.
